1000 Words Friends,
First, let me thank you for your support of the 1000 Words project! In order to keep our biggest fans updated on our progress, we have compiled a quick update for you below. Our mission is to give Dalton a voice through public art, accelerate beautification, instill pride in our community & inspire the next generation. We hope you will join us on our journey!
2015 Project #1: Keep Dalton Whitfield Beautiful Mural
We got off to a great start in 2015 with our first project: a sustainability and recycling themed mural on the side wall of Mapco, located on Thornton Avenue. This mural is sponsored by Keep Dalton Whitfield Beautiful and created by Henry Green, a talented local artist and muralist. We held two volunteer weekends for 20+ volunteers to prepare and prime the wall in preparation for the mural. These volunteers included teens from City of Refuge, who enjoyed helping Henry think of new animals to add to his design. While the weather has caused delays to the timeline, the design is taking shape and we can't wait to see the finished product.
2015 Project #2: Before I Die Wall
Our second project was an interactive project, led by Madeline Toelke: a "Before I Die" wall on (and sponsored by) The Bucket List Antiques & Collectibles in Downtown Dalton. This concept originated with artist Candy Chang in New Orleans, Louisiana. People are invited to interact, by writing their desires; "Before I die I want to…sing for millions, plant a tree, see my daughter graduate, eat more everything, abandon all insecurities, be completely myself…" Currently, over 1,000 Before I Die walls have been created in over 35 languages and over 70 countries (More information: BeforeIDie.cc). We hope you will stop by and make your addition to the wall!
A Dalton State Athletics Mural is already in the works for Downtown Dalton in early 2016. In addition to this project, the steering team has selected four focus projects for 2016:
- Historical Mural - Create a tribute to Dalton history on a highly visible wall in Downtown Dalton.
- School/Community Project - Bring the community together with a public art project created by the people and for the people.
- Parking Deck to Event Space - Transform a Downtown parking deck into a creative event space by showcasing talented local artists.
- Interactive/Kinetic Sculpture - Interactive sculptures or "playable art" allow the observer to interact with the artwork through music, motion, contributions, etc. We hope to encourage people to stop, interact, and reflect.
(Other projects may happen in 2016 as funding becomes available or other businesses/groups are inspired to create public art of their own!)
